I’d like to share with you some of the different types of anger patterns that I have noticed in clients coming for help with anger management.

It can be helpful to recognise our own anger patterns so that we can understand how best to address them.

The graphs below are an alternative way of illustrating these different types of anger responses. See if you can recognise your own patterns among them.

Short fuse

Short fuse

Experienced by people who quickly get their anger out of their system and then often quickly forget about it.

Sulk

Sulk

Experienced by people who feel angry, withdraw from communication, hold on to their anger for a while (usually until their feelings have been noticed and acknowledged in some way), and then gradually let it go.

Irritability

Irritable

Experienced by people who cannot express a desire to resolve a problem, or a need for more personal space, and instead repeatedly snap at others in order to bring matters to a head.

Resentment

Resentment

Experienced by people who are reluctant to express their growing anger but consequently feel a gradual build up of anger until they can no longer contain it and suddenly explode.

Meta anger

Meta anger
